The 2008 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament or, in the popular vernacular, “March Madness,”  starts this week.  The Final Four will be played at San Antonio, Texas, on April 5 to 7.

The map shows the 65 teams involved, with each school’s home town, conference affiliation, and average attendance listed.

The tournament starts Tuesday, with the play-in game.  The first round games are Thursday and Friday.

East Regional (@ Charlotte, NC).  #1. North Carolina.   2. Tennessee.   3. Louisville.

South Regional (@ Houston, TX).  #1. Memphis.   2. Texas.   3. Stanford.

Midwest Regional (@ Detroit, MI).  #1. Kansas.   2. Georgetown.   3. Wisconsin.

West Regional (@ Phoenix, AZ).  #1. UCLA.   2. Duke.   3. Xavier

Here is a blank brackets column to print.

[Note: There will be March Madness update posts, starting with a teams’ average attendance list, Tuesday night.    For non-USA based sports fans of this site, don’t worry, I will have some more European football maps in the next few weeks, including the 2008 Russian Premier League, and the UEFA Cup Quarter-Finals.   And sorry if there are errors…this map was done on the fly.
Finally, my pick is Memphis.

This is the third college basketball rankings map I’ve done this season.  To see the other two,  click on “categoies,”  under “ncaa basketball,”  and scroll down past this post.

The unbeaten Memphis Tigers took over the # 1 spot on January 21, after North Carolina lost to Maryland.

Here is a list of the 13 teams that have been in the top 25 since the last week of November.

1. Memphis.   2. Duke.   3. North Carolina.   4. Kansas.   5. UCLA.   6. Georgetown.   7. Tennessee.   10. Butler.   11. Michigan State.   12. Texas.   14. Indiana.   16. Marquette.   18. Texas A&M.

The A.P. Poll is from 5 AM, this morning.  The school’s logos are sized progressively smaller, as the rankings go from # 1, to # 25.  I last did this map 5 weeks ago, on November 23rd.
The North Carolina Tar Heels stay at # 1, and the Memphis Tigers, the Kansas Jayhawks, and the UCLA Bruins still are in the top 5.   Gone from the top 25, since November 23rd, are Louisville, Oregon, Gonzaga, Kansas State, Southern Illinois, Syracuse, Virginia, and Florida.

I will try to do a couple more of these maps, up to March Madness, and then I will make a map of all 65 schools that make it to the 2008 NCAA Basketball Tournament.

This is a new concept I’m trying out here. I’ve taken the latest Associated Press College Basketball Poll, and made a map out of it.  The 25 top ranked school’s emblems are scaled progressively smaller, as the team rankings go down from #1 to #25.
