The FA Cup – the oldest football tournament in the world – begins its 146th edition on the evening of Friday the 6th of November, with two interesting ties:

-Out in the West Country, at Memorial Stadium in Horfield, north Bristol, the Bristol Rovers of League Two (the 4th division) will host recently-promoted 3rd tier side Cambridge United [of East Anglia].

-And in a televised match, 6th-tier side Oxford City (of the National League North), will host Leicester City, who were only a decade ago the 2016 Premier League champions, and only 5 years ago were the 2021 FA Cup winners, but who have now been twice-relegated (to the 3rd division). The match will take place at Oxford City’s ground, Marsh Lane [MGroup Stadium], which is in Marston, north-east Oxford, Oxfordshire {see illustration further below}.

Here are the rest of the 8 televised matches in the 1st Round…

-The 2 televised matches on Saturday the 7th are: Altrincham (5) [of Greater Manchester] v Notts County (3) [of Nottingham]; and Peterborough United (3) [of East Anglia] v Reading (3) [of Berkshire].

The 4 televised matches on Sunday the 8th are: Stafford Rangers (8) [of Staffordshire] v Grimsby Town (4) [of NE Lincolnshire]; Cray Wanderers (7) [of East London] v Stockport County (3) [of Greater Manchester]; Wimbourne Town (7) [of Dorset] v Crawley Town (4) [of Surrey]; and Oldham Athletic (4) [of Greater Manchester] v Sheffield Wednesday (3) [of South Yorkshire].

And the televised match on Monday the 9th is: Plymouth Parkway (7) [of Devon] v Berkhamsted (7) [of Hertfordshire, just north-west of London].

Six of the eight televised matches will be from the home grounds of non-League clubs, which is great to see. In fact, Monday’s tie features two 7th-tier clubs (Plymouth Parkway and Berkhamsted), and there are actually more 7th-tier teams in this season’s FA Cup (8 of them) than there are 6th-tier teams (6 of them).
